Another Online ConX Review!

Another good review! Excellent! I'd agree entirely with his comments, and say that it's probably best to check out the old supplements for more info on the background and for inspiration for where to start with your game... at least until the 2.0 sourcebooks come out.

Check it out!

I must admit, I'm getting very frustrated by the lack of source books as well. I understand that Eden Studios is a small company and they're going to have difficulty keeping up with the big boys, and I don't expect them to. However, when I looked in the paranormal section of the core book and found only 3 psychic powers and only 5 magical rituals, I felt ripped off. I felt like I had been given a "core" book that had so little rules for the paranormal that it made psychic and magic virtually unplayable. I felt like Eden Studios had given me such little information in order to tempt me into buying a source book, which I honestly don't have a huge problem with, as long as you put out the source book. However, you haven't. I've had this core book since it came out, and I'm still running my Conspiracy X game in GURPS. We moved over to GURPS because we thought the original system was too confusing. We were thrilled by the idea of a new version, but since my group contains a psychic and a ritual magician, we weren't able to bring the characters over to the new rules at all. So, since I've had this book for over a year now and I still don't have enough information to make it playable, I feel like I've been had. The core book was printed in January 2006. It's been a year and a half. Please, PLEASE, just give me enough information so I can play a full game. I don't think that's too much to ask.

Is that really when the core book came out? I bought it soon after it came out...but I'd forgotten how long it has been.

Not even all the powers and rituals from the original mainbook have made it through.

Frustrating, yes. I started work on Conspiracy X 4 years ago last December (at pitch level and sorting the conversion) and from 4 years ago last April (at actual contract signing and starting). But, Eden have had some setbacks since then (Buffy for one). The Corebook was sent to the printers Jan 2006 (actually getting released in May), so yes... it has been a year since the last book.

When I was contracted, we looked at putting all the Rituals and Psi in the corebook (mostly because we were incorporating Shadows of the Mind and Forsaken Rites), but it was just too darn big. It made it a hell of a lot bigger than Armageddon (and too big to be either financially or physically viable). So, it was decided that we'd keep them for the supplements.

The corebook is completely playable. If you need the other psychic powers, download Witchcraft (it's free, and has a load of nifty invocations in there as well that you can rip off). If you're using the GURPS version, again, you've only got half a game. You do need an awful lot of GURPS supplements for a the full experience. Most of the time, with Eden players, they already have Witchcraft, All Flesh, Armageddon, or something like that, which already has all the psi-powers and a whole host of rituals and magical stuff in there to steal for your ConX game. I'm sorry if you haven't played these (you're missing a blast!), but as I said, WitchCraft is free to download from the Eden site, and well worth a look.

The ETs and Paranormal Sourcebooks are done and dusted, and have been for a while. They just need laying out, and stuff, but the designer is George who has a lot on his plate. Hopefully, there will be news soon.

The Conspiracies Sourcebook is done as well, just needs Alex to run his editorial eye over it. It includes the unpublished Area 51 sourcebook, and reveals who the Third Group is, so hopefully it'll be well worth the wait.

Sorry if you're frustrated by the delay in supplements. I think everyone, including all at Eden, are just as frustrated themselves. Initially it was going to be like D&D (3 core books), but things got in the way... it's a conspiracy I tell you!
